Just wondered if anyone can help me and tell me if there is a difference to a diagnosis of Antiphospholipid Syndrome and a diagnosis of Antiphospholipid syndrome and Lupus Anticoagulant ? is there one or are they just the same diagnosis ?
yes you can have aps ,and you can have L.A.or like myself you can have both , along with a bunch of other things also. there is a test called the L.A. test ,its can get very confussing , im sure you will see more to you on this . and its not unusual to see conflicting things in the different articles you may read!!??-------------------------------- jet
Lupus anticoagulant is one of the markers for Antiphospholipid Syndrome, and not like its name it doesnt mean you have Lupus either it is one of ten markers for lupus and you need to have at least 6 of them to be diagnosed for Lupus
The other marker for APS is the ACA's (anticardiolipin antibodies)
I have lupus anticoagulant positive Aps, many positives, My anticardiolipins have only been positive once. Also positive Ana's. Still the same symptoms though!!
Take care gentle hugs love sheena xxxxxxxxxx
Possibly having Lupus Anticoagulant is a sign you have APS or they could mean you have APS. Have you had 2 positive tests? Lupus Anticoagulant is one of the tests for APS which there are just a few they usually check although this can vary between doctors.
You can have the LA without APS in some instances but if you are symptomatic the doctor may be leaning toward a diagnosis of APS.
They are:
lupus anticoagulant
Anti Beta2 Glycoprotein1 (IgG, IgM, IgA)
Anti Cardiolipin (IgG, IgM, IgA)
phosphatidylserine is another being run with more regularity.
The IgG, IgM, IgA are just 3 different types of the same antibodies and they check all the levels to see which ones are high as not all are usually high.
Jet, Jet, Jet... am I going to have to smack you in the head to get you to understand that those are just the antibodies you have FOR APS, not a sepreate diagnosis.....You are complicating it more than you need to silly boy. Hope all is well I haven't heard from you in a while- you owe me an email!
Hi thanks for your responses i have a diagnosis of both but just thought they were the same thing just a different name. very confusing with all the different names for condition. I was diagnosed in 204 but still learning.
i have suffered Thromboembolism, Extensive IVC, Femoral & Iliac vein thrombosis, right heptic vein thrombosis and PE, only just finding out this due to a medical assessment i have had to gather medical evidence and nothing has ever been explained to me and my Doctors have had to write reports
Yes, the name issue is all very confusing - as Kristina says, there are three main tests which currently look for antiphospholipid antibodies:
lupus anticoagulant
anticardiolipin
anti-beta2-glycoprotein1
Research is beginning to find that the different tests can often have different outcomes - having all three now seems to imply that you are most at risk for thrombosis.
The name has a real energy at the moment and it seems unlikely it will even remain as APS in the future - there is too much research needed until it will be finalised though.
