Has anyone tried a natural approach

Hi all, I am new to the group, been on warfarin for about a year and a half - and had a bleeding ulcer a few months back. I am now thinking that I might like to try it "au natural." My internal medicine doc said my 2nd test results, were lower than the first ones, and maybe have been done while I was on antibiotics - was done when I was in the hospital for the bleeding ulcer.

I am 65 lbs overweight and high cholesterol, and if I go on a vegan diet, it could well clear those up, and maybe that would reduce my risk, along with the ability to eat garlic and ginger, and celery, and all those other forbidden foods that thin your blood, along of course with lots of Vitamin K foods.

I just had the one PE, a year and a 1/2 ago, and did get superficial blood clots in my arms from the iv's when I was in the hospital (that is probably kind of normal, right)?

Opinions??

Id get advice from a proffessional, can you get regular blood tests to see if your natural methods are working - like when they monitor your range on warfarin to make sure its working to the right standard?? Alot of people on here seem to know when their INR falls as they get symptoms but would you know quickly enough to stop a fatal clot? Just a thought ... Good luck with it though - very interested to know how it works out for you. The hardest decision is whether to go on to warfarin as we seem to be damned if we do and damned if we dont!! I fall over a lot and am very worried about moving from my trial of heaprin on to warfarin - i bruise and bleed terribly anyway but I have had a stroke at 32 and eyesight failing and I want to be around for my kids!! Best of luck and let us know ....... x

Hi christy

Welcome and good to meet you.

Always check with medical team before trying natural approach. Maintaining Inr on warfarin is hard, personally more scared of another clot, than side effects of warfarin.

I too want stay around for my kids.

I hope you well today.

Take care gentle hugs sheena xxxxxx :-) :-) :-)

Hi Christy

You can still have a good diet when on Warfarin, as long as you eat the same amout of vit K daily ( not all of a sudden )

your INR will hopefully be kept at a good level. It would help with Cholestrol as well. I would stay on the drugs supplied by the Doctor,

? go on a statin if you have't already been prescribed by your Doctor

I am a vegan due to religious beliefs. I eat a lot of different foods, today I am having mushroom, almond and cauliflower biriani made with brown rice.

For lunch I had miso soup and rice cakes with caramelised onion hummus.

Breakfast was a pot of tea with soya milk and 2 home made fig and orange slices (similar to fig roll).

Being vegan I do have to spend a lot more time planning what to eat and cooking as most processed foods isn't suitable.

Can you be bothered with that?

Eating plenty of green veg is ok as long as you are consistent, there is a study going on here in Newcastle as to whether taking vitamin K will help stabilise the INR of people on warfarin and as well as taking a supplement they are encouraging them to eat more veg.

If you are on warfarin any change in diet can affect your INR.

I am not sure what you mean by au natural do you mean no medications, if so I would say you are considering something very risky.

Do not stop your medicines without advice from your doctor. If they are causing you problems talk to the doctors and they may be able to prescribe a different one.

A vegan diet may help cholesterol levels, but may not reduce it enough if you are at risk. You need medical advice in that.

Personally I can tell you my hospital consultant is in favour of statins and my GP against. So I get the cholesterol monitored and once a year do a fasting cholesterol and I have agreed if my bad cholesterol goes up, I will consider taking them. So far only total cholesterol levels around 5, but the bad one isn't high.

Do your research by ordering one of the many free packs you can get by filling in forms on the internet. Search terms vegetarian starter pack and go vegetarian pack.

Important to remember:

1. Protein

2. Vitamin B12

3. Iron

4. Calcium
